the fiercegrrl ornament shop

it is up! and already filling up with affordable and totally adorable ornaments that would make great holiday gifts...or look great on your very own tree. all proceeds from the ornament sales go directly to benefit nicole. so now there are two ways to help out (the auction continues on the blog as well).

the chickadee contribution is coming soon! so keep your eyes out for that. of course, it isn't exactly an ornament...but it fits with the theme....

shame, boatloads of shame

it is shameful and sad that the couch located just steps from this here chickadee computer portal was in desperate need of pillows for such a long time. the old ones were tattered and torn and truly unwelcoming. a rare free friday afternoon came along and it was time to take action!

dear couch, languish no more! you finally have new friends:

(this project has been in the making for quite a while and the fabric for it was purchased so long ago that i can't even recall the name of the collection. will research if anyone is interested. shame!)

look ma, matched corners!

yo-yo!

here's a new festive and flashy holiday treat from casa de chickadee -- wreaths covered with old fashioned fabric yo-yo's. each little "blossom" was made the old fashioned way too. that's a lot of hand-stitched love in one little wreath that is looking to brighten up your home for the holidays. the dark days ahead are no match for the sparkle and shine of these shimmery rings. come and check them out at cut the craft this weekend!

turning over a new leaf

from the continuing series, "how to teach an old fabric new tricks", this chickadee brings you a fantastic and fanciful take on the fall wreath. made from repurposed fabric, each leaf is individually quilted, cut out and then pinned in place on a fabric wrapped wreath form. it would be a welcome (and welcoming) addition to the front door or certainly something to talk about as a centerpiece.

come and see for yourself at cut the craft!

that rug really tied the room together

this particular quote is a repeat offender. it sold out at the last show but it is going to be a standard offering because of its awesomeness. the chickadee abides...

no fun, my babe, no fun

hmmm...sort of hard to read the text in the photo.
it says: "why don't you like fun?"

well....why don't you?

a week of wall pillows

wall pillows are a pretty new product in the chickadee menagerie. here's how they are hatched:

  1. start with a quote...a song lyric or line from a movie mostly. but you never know...
  2. machine embroider that quote with a little embellishment onto a neutral fabric.
  3. patchwork pretty fabrics all around.
  4. wrap the patchwork square around an 8"x10" canvas that's been cushioned with several layers of quilt batting.
  5. hang on the wall and admire how it ties the room together.

there will be several of these downy decorations on display at crafty bastards (on october 4th, if you didn't know). this week is devoted to divulging them to you, the devoted fans of one crazy chickadee. eventually the line-up will expand and maybe even include some custom orders!

here's today's wall pillow:

hey hot stuff

piping hot pans pulled out of the oven and steaming sautées slipped from the stove are always welcome at the chickadee table. and now they have a place to rest their sizzling surfaces. please set a place for the new coiled cotton trivets (that's a fancy word for hot plate).

these are made from clothesline that has been covered with cotton and coiled...just like their cousins the bowls. right now they are appearing in 7" and 9" diameters and there are some thoughts to add another size. please give them a warm welcome when they make their debut at crafty bastards on october 4th!

scarf stories

speaking of travel, this chickadee recently wrapped up a cute little custom order that was sparked by some sightseeing souvenirs. caitlin c. contacted chickadee central about making some pillows from scarves that she'd collected during some recent adventures. what a great idea! and what a fun project too. here's what we came up with:

the two gray pillows in the background are 20" square. she had four of these scarves so the pillows are the same front and back, fully lined with a zipper closure at the bottom. the other three scarves were one of a kind. they are 18" squares backed with natural denim and have an envelope style closure. there was enough material on two of them to add a little bit of flair to the overlapping sections.

thanks caitlin for entrusting me to make something out of the beautiful things that you collected! hope that they brighten your space and remind you of the wonderful places you've visited...as well as provide comfort and cushion when you need a rest from wandering.

off the wall

here's something new that made a debut at charm city craft mafia's pile of craft.

what in the world is it, do you ask? why it is a little bit of decoration for your wall. the platform is an 8" x 10" canvas that is covered with several lofty layers of quilt batting. then a patchwork piece is wrapped around and secured to the frame with a few shots from the staple gun. voila! the wall pillow is born.

this is an idea that has been cooking for quite a long time on the chickadee back burner. it was fun to finally turn thought to reality. tomorrow you'll meet the other two members of the first ever chickadee wall pillow collection. be on the lookout for more in the future!
